Chat Danger
Is this your first time chatting? Well below are a few rules to follow to keep safe when chatting:

  1. Be careful - people online may not be who they say they are no matter how convincing they may sound. The reality is that online friends are really just strangers.
  2. Do NOT give out any personal information (i.e where you live, school, email address, picture, telephone number, etc) - you may end up being contacted strangers. Make sure your profile in the forums or chat does not include any personal information.
  3. Never arrange to meet someone offline, this can be very dangerous.
  4. Report to a Xivio Guardian, support@Xivio.com, or a parent or legal guardian  if someone or something makes you worried or uncomfortable at this site.

Online Bullying
With the web providing an increased number of social communication tools (email, SMS, chat rooms, instant messaging) for users, there has been an increase in the number of users who are using these tools to antagonize or intimidate others. This usually happens to younger people. Because bullies commonly harass their victims away from the watchful eyes of adults or guardians, the Internet is the perfect place for them to reach others anonymously. For many younger users, home is no longer a place of refuge from school bullying. Users should be aware that some forms of online bullying are considered criminal acts. It is illegal to communicate repeatedly with someone if your communication will cause any fear for the safety of the person you are communicating with or the safety of others. If you feel you are being bullied, please report any incidents to your local police or your Internet Service Provider (ISP) who can then investigate the issue further.

Internet Addiction
It is important for users to be aware that too much time spent in chat rooms is not good. It is important to maintain a healthy balance between online and offline life. Internet addiction is usually identified by events including, but not limited to, the following: sense of euphoria while at the computer, problems with school or work, feeling empty or depressed when away from the computer, and neglecting family and friends. Internet addiction can also lead to physical problems. Take a break, once in a while.

Content Ratings
All user published media such as pictures, music, video and text are graded with a Media Score to protect younger members from viewing inappropriate content. Grades are assigned by voting users in a process that begins after any content is uploaded or published. Parents are able to limit what kinds of content their children can view by registering a Master Account and linking it to other existing child accounts. Parents can set the minimum grade for viewable content for each account and also disable some services which they find unsuitable. They can do this from the Parental Controls page which is accessible after logging into a Master Account.

Master Accounts are just like normal accounts. Parents also get an Avatar and are able to interact with the community just as their children can. In addition they are also given access to Parental Controls not found in regular accounts. To designate an account as a Master Account simply register as usual from Xivio.com, and in the signup form check the "Master Account" option. Once accounts are registered you are not able to change Master Account to normal account or vice-versa for security reasons.

When logged into a Master Account you are given easy access to parent related services via links which are visible from the Login Pane (right under the portrait of your Avatar). Those include: Account Settings, Parental Controls and Parents Zone. Account Settings is a link available to all accounts which allows you to change your email address, password, and also set Media Score settings for that account. (Note: Media Score settings are visible but disabled from a normal account when the account has been linked to a Master Account preventing children from making changes to their settings).

The Parental Controls page is a Master Account Only area of the site that makes it easy for you to edit Media Score settings for your child's account(s).

Linking Child (normal) Accounts to a Master Account
To link a normal account (can also be called a Child Account) to a Master you first must be on the Parental Controls Page. You will notice a link on the left hand side of the page in the "Controls" Pane titled "Add New Avatar." All that is required to link an account is a valid Username and Password for the specific account you wish to link. If you do not know this, you will have to get this from your child as Xivio will not divulge such information as a security precaution.

Once the account has been linked, you will be able to edit their Media Score and other settings from the Parental Controls page anytime in the future. If you would like to link an additional account or accounts you may do so with the same process. Managing additional accounts will also be done from the same page. You may link an unlimited number of accounts to your Master Account. Please note, once an account has been linked to a Master Account it may never be re-linked to another Master Account. This is a security precaution.

Rating Content & Consensus-Scores Our LiveConcord System allows parents and users over the age of 18 to lend a hand and help make Xivio a safer place for our kids by grading media whenever possible. As a reward for your efforts you will be given Vio whenever a vote you place on any given content meets the Consensus-Score of that media. A Consensus-Score is the grade most voted by the community for each piece of media. For instance if a video is uploaded and there are 100 votes placed, if the greatest number of votes are for a PG rating, PG is the final grade given that media. After so many votes have been tallied voting ends for that given media and it's grade is solidified as a Consensus-Score. Note: The specifics of our grading formulas such as total number of votes required to meet concensus are not provided so to diffuse any attempts to degrade the fairness of the LiveConcord System.
